Premier's Award Nominees 2005

 

Seneca is proud to nominate four outstanding alumni for the 2005 Premier's Awards. These alumni were selected based on their career excellence and contributions to their communities. Seneca is proud of their achievements and for offering the college education that contributed to their success.

The winners and nominees will be honoured at a special awards ceremony at Cambrian College in Sudbury on February 20, 2006.

 

Chief Armand La Barge

Armand La Barge joined the York Regional Police Force 33 years ago as a uniformed officer. He turned to Seneca College to help him hone his skills. As the region grew and became one of the most culturally diverse areas of Canada , he continued what was to become a lifetime of studies with a particular interest in multiculturalism. As Chief, he helped create an inclusive hiring and training program to make the force more representative of the community. He has also ensured that members of the force learn more about different cultures and traditions. He has been honoured by the community and his peers for his commitment.

 

Larry DeFlorio

Computer Animation, 1997

 

Larry DeFlorio's gift is the ability to see potential in people and everything around him, earning him Gemini Award for his contribution in the field of motion capture. As Executive in Charge of Production of the Oscar® winning film “Ryan”, he brought Seneca to the highest accolades in animation industry. Along with being the current Head of Modeling at Mainframe Entertainment, he volunteers time on the advisory boards of Burnaby 's Art Institute and Victoria 's Canada University , and continues to mentor Seneca students and graduates.

 

Catherine Martin

Animal Health Technician, 1990

 

Catherine Martin is among the first Registered Veterinarian Technicians in Canada to specialize in a particular area of animal health. Starting with her student internship at the Humber Equine Clinic of Doctors Bonder and Vatcher, Catherine has honed her expertise in equine health and anaesthesia. She has lectured at veterinary and technician conferences across North Amercia , laying the groundwork for more technicians to become specialists. As the Equine Product Manager for Wyeth Animal Health, Catherine masterminded the product launch of the West Nile vaccine for horses which reduced the number of infected horses from 445 in 2003 to just 13 in 2004.

 

Helen Szumigaj

General Business, 1978

 

Twenty years ago when women were an anomaly in the male-dominated packaged-goods industry, Helen boldly talked her way into a sales position with Dare Foods at a time when there were no vacancies. Straight out of Seneca, management bought her youthful confidence, and customers bought her cookies and crackers. Helen stayed at Dare for 11 years, enjoying a series of promotions from district to national sales manager to developing new product lines. In 1994, Helen joined Cadbury Chocolate Canada as the Ontario Regional Accounts Manager and Mother Parker's Tea & Coffee in 1999 as the Manager of Sales Operations. She was promoted to Vice President Retail Sales Canada and Export Markets in November 2004 where she continues to blaze new trails, launch new products and challenges employees in exciting new ways.
