What is an Alumni??

The term ‘Alumni’ is a latin word which loosely translated means “a graduate”.

A male graduate is termed an Alumnus
A female graduate is termed an Alumnae
a group of graduates are termed Alumni.

So – the Seneca College Alumni Association is the association of those who have graduated from Seneca College.

The Association is 100,000+ members strong, and became an official Association (with by-laws) within the College structure in 1992. There have, though, been Alumni groups since the first graduates in the late 1960’s – we’re proud to say that many of that original group as still connected with the Alumni Association in it’s current form

The Seneca College Alumni Association’s mission is:
To assist our members in achieving their lives’ potential, and the College in realizing its Mission, through fostering mutually beneficial relationships.

This boils down to a 3 important points:

1) We want to help all Seneca College Alumni in reaching their lives’ potential

We do this through:

  • Assisting with career search
  • providing social activities
  • providing volunteer opportunities
  • providing opportunities to interact and help to shape the lives of current students
  • providing opportunities to ‘give back’ to the College
  • providing opportunities to visit, engage and see what has changed on campus since they graduated

2) We want to help the College in realizing it’s goal – to be a superior leader in post-secondary education.

The College’s reputation and stature will only increase based on the reputation and stature of its graduates. The Seneca education will only be worthwhile to incoming students if they know that they will find employment, doing what they love with a Seneca degree, diploma or certificate.

We do this by:

  • Asking graduates to speak at convocation, to highlight their career success, based on their Seneca education
  • recommending Alumni to sit on the College’s Board of Governors – to assist in guiding and shaping the direction of the College
  • recommending Alumni to sit on program advisory committees, to shape today’s educational requirements
  • we showcase and recognize our Alumni through award nominations and the Distinguished Alumni Award program each year

3) We foster mutually beneficial relationships between:

  • The College and it’s students
  • the College and Alumni,
  • Alumni and students
  • Alumni and the College’s partners

This strengthens the connection between a grad and the College – we want them to remember that they are where they are today, because of their choice to attend Seneca College for their post-secondary education.

The Association has a number of staff members and a volunteer Board of Directors

Andrew McDonald – Manager, Alumni
Bill Jones – Manager, Affinity Partnerships and Alumni Engagement
Rafmir Matute – Alumni Office Co-ordinator
Beth Cockburn – Alumni Assistant

Our Board is a volunteer board consisting of 12 Directors, each serving a term of two years. The board is our ‘sober second thought’ – they ensure that we, as staff, are fiscally responsible and are managing the Association effectively.
